A moderate south easterly made for good sailing at Beccles last Saturday, especially for the ever-popular sailing school which again saw another hefty turnout of adults and juniors.

A moderate south easterly made for good sailing at Beccles last Saturday, especially for the ever-popular sailing school which again saw another hefty turnout of adults and juniors.

At 12.30 the Novices Salver race had 12 young helms on the water. After capitalising on a good start, Rowan Curtis in his Optimist 'Bittern' kept just behind Katie Roll in her Topper 'Mambo Jambo' to take first on handicap after two rounds.

The pursuit race had 16 boats out on the Waveney and certainly favoured the single handers but even the Lasers couldn't catch Nigel and Abbie Shipley in their Norfolk 'Herewego' who led the pack after the 30-minute gun.

In the handicap race Jonathan Blankley was unfortunate with a high-speed spill in his Laser 'Tardis' on the run up to the new bridge marker and only an immediate response from the crew of 'Mutley II' who were chasing at the time saved him from being over-run. Jake Shipley, however, was streaking ahead in his Laser and won convincingly if only by six seconds over father Nigel in his NOD after handicap.

The Enterprise Trophy saw only five boats on the water this week. Mutley II managed to get ahead from the start but a battle between Polyarchy and Sharkie for second ensued with Kevin Edwards, helming Sharkie, creeping past to seal second.

In the junior races Hugh Braidwood in his Optimist had a convincing double this week especially in race one where he managed to cross the line with Topper helm Milo Phillips after 23 minutes, such was his dominance.

Readers are reminded that the Enterprise Open is hosted by BASC on June 21.
