Sailing skills developed by novices at Beccles
BECCLES sailors were treated to sunshine and a light westerly breeze giving novice helms at BASC sailing school ideal conditions in which to hone their skills.
A mixed fleet of 11 boats took to the water for the Novice Salver which ended in a tie between the Toppers of Alfie Howat and Kyran Cashman, with Regan Cashman in third.
Ruairi Buck, Jade Lindquist and Sara McNaughton made valiant efforts in the two rounds of the Bittern Cup but it was George Curtis in Optimist Bittern who was uncatchable, leading from the start to take the bell.
With the wind picking up and the tide ebbing, 17 crews began the pursuit race which saw the Enterprises of Edwards and Gentry out of the running after making a return to the first mark. Solid sailing by Richard Deller and Shirley Roll in Enterprise Cuddles was not enough to catch Rory Kelsey and Geogie Roll in Norfolk Tankard, who took the honours after 30 minutes. Meanwhile, Nigel and Abby Shipley in newly-purchased Enterprise Stirer sailed to victory on corrected time in the Coronation Cup.
Elena Edwards in Topper Bubble secured two wins in the Mirror Trophy, pushing her closer to the top off the leader board. Kelsey and Roll in Tankard battled from third place to be first home in the Bacchante Trophy.
