FOR the Boxing Day sailing at Beccles Amateur Sailing Club a surprisingly large number of boats got out on the Waveney despite the chilly easterly for the traditional BASC race.

With eight double-handers and two Toppers, the start line was fairly hectic and this showed as two Ents, Sharkie and Tarka IV, had to return after being over the line on the horn. The rest of the fleet however got away but were caught in a muddle round the new bridge marker. This allowed the two flailing Enterprises to slip round the back and roll-gybe past to come out in second and third positions behind Richard and Matthew Deller in Cuddles who were heading the fleet.

Team Deller closely followed by Kevin and Elena Edwards moved ahead of the pack through the next two rounds as a battle for third and fourth broke out between Glen and Lucie Curtis in Tarka IV and Mike and Shirley Roll in their Wayfarer, Yarebeat.

Eventually, Yarebeat slid past and started to threaten the two leading Enterprises in the last lap. Dave Gentry and Jackie Soards in their Enterprise had recovered well from the earlier group gathering and were pushing for fourth position.

But Richard and Matthew Deller crossed the line to take first just seven seconds ahead of Kevin and Elena Edwards. Mike and Shirley Roll, only six seconds behind Sharkie, took a well-deserved third.

After the boats were put away, prize giving took place in the comfort of the clubhouse where the Commodore Richard Deller expressed thanks for possibly the best turnout of boats for 10 years and especially to OOD Jo Edwards and Roger Campling on the rescue boat.

Members can reflect on a highly successful year at the growing Beccles Amateur Sailing Club and look forward to the annual prize giving and dinner dance on the of February 14 at the Waveney House Hotel.

Result (Boxing Day race): 1 R and M Deller, 2 K and E Edwards, 3 M and S Roll, 4 G and L Curtis, 5 D Gentry and J Soards, 6 O Baylis, 7 B Ashcroft, 8 B and E Playle, 9 R and C Baylis, 10 H and D Braidwood.
