Velo Club Baracchi's promotion of the Broome Heath Scramble, the eleventh round of the East Anglian Daily Times Cyclo Cross League, went without a hitch on Sunday.

A glorious day greeted the riders and they all enjoyed fast racing on the light and well-drained soils. Progress was only held up by the deliberate obstacles in the competitors' path.

In addition to the usual pair of hurdles there were some tricky descents between the bushes and some uphill struggles, one of which was rideable for most, whereas the other was on such loose sand and gravel that only running with the bike shouldered aloft would do.

The winner of the top race for seniors and juniors was junior rider David Nichols of Glendene CC, with Ben Roach of Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club second in the same time and Bungay rider Shaun Aldous of Lotto Olympia Team Interbike hot in pursuit in third place, 10 seconds down.

A slightly bigger field of 47 riders contested the race for veterans and women. Phillip Roach of Rugby Velo beat Julian Parker of Ipswich BC into second place with Clive Ling of Diss & District CC third.

The fastest woman was Abbie Thorrington of 53-12 Multisports, who took thirteenth place overall.

Hugo Robinson of Ipswich BC won the youth's race and the Under 12 race was won by Archie Wishart from Welwyn Wheelers CC.

Riders had come from far and wide and many were complimentary about the organisation, headed by Patrick Harbord of VCB, who was assisted by many club members on the day.
