The last track and field match of the season for Waveney Valley AC took place on Sunday at the Bury St Edmunds Athletics Stadium in the East Anglian League finals.

Just the U13 boys qualified from Waveney and a series of fantastic performances placed Waveney in third place, just 10 points short of second placed Norwich, against the eight teams taking part, who in turn qualified from 16 teams.

The weather conditions were poor, with a bright sunny start eventually turning into heavy rain and thunder for most of the afternoon, making the two new club records being set all the more impressive.

Joel Burgess rounded off a fantastic season, winning all his A string events, 100m in a club record 13.4, 200m in 27.7 and long jump with 4.74m.

Finn Howes capped a very consistent season with first in 200m B String, second in B long jump with a new pb of 4.18m and a strong 75mH setting a new pb and club record in 13.6.

Vaughan Beckham’s late season bursts saw him win the shot put B string with a pb of 6.16m. He also came fourth in the 75mH B string and fifth in high jump A with a further pb of 1.25m.

Ethan Hodds threw a pb of 7.75m in a very high standard A string shot put contest. He also threw 20.35m to come third in the discus.

Ben Cone ran to fifth in the 800m B and sixth in the 100m B with Jack Gooch competing in a rain hit 1500m and javelin, with William Browne also competing in the 1500m.

Seth Frankland was placed fifth in the high jump with 1.10m, and Nathan Littlejohns finished seventh in his 800m A string race.

Several other athletes competed for Waveney’s under 13 boys team throughout the season, who were unlucky not to be selected for final — notably Charles Hardy who put in solid performances throughout the year.

Winter training has now commenced, with the focus turning to strength and stamina, however the club has a packed winter Sportshall fixture list, and will also contest the Suffolk Winter League cross country series.

New members are welcomed, however there is a waiting list for U11 athletes.
