There was little time for Beccles Town to dwell on Saturday's crushing last-minute winner by Halvergate as they travelled to second-placed Norwich Union on Tuesday, still in search of the three points to ensure survival.

However, the Wherrymen were forced into team changes with centre-backs Chris Mayhew (university) and Sean Payne (working) unavailable and centre- forward Hurren suspended. Beccles moved Lee Pike to right-back, Neil McMorran moved across to centre-back, Nick Day slotted into midfield and Antony Martin returned up front.

This would be Beccles' last visit to Pinebanks as the ground has been earmarked for other purposes. Beccles seemed to be relishing this and took the game to their high-flying Dolphin Autos Anglian Combination Premier Division opponents.

Antony Martin did really well to pick his way through the Union defence and find himself with just the keeper to beat, however his shot was smothered and cleared.

Good link-up play from Pike at full back picked out the lively King, who beat two men before smashing his shot just over the bar from some 20 yards.

Although Union were having the odd sporadic attack, these were ably handled by the new Barham-McMorran combination, who kept the lively home forwards in check.

Greengrass too at left-back rarely gets the plaudits, but his pace and awareness are important too in breaking up attacks.

Beccles took the lead on 25 minutes. Another good move down the right between Daniels and King saw Daniels advance on goal, and with Woods coming in from the left, the ball was delivered to him.

Woods sprang the defence and his persistence saw him finish from an acute angle to put the Wherrymen 1-0 up.

Lee Pike, who had been so instrumental in the attacks down the right, then had to leave the field following an incident with an opposition player, leaving him with a gaping gash in his forehead which needed immediate hospital treatment, his place going to Mark Bicker.

At half-time Beccles had the upper hand.

The second half to begin with was largely lacking in incident compared to what had gone before.

Beccles defended brilliantly and it was therefore something of a surprise when the home side equalised, heading in a corner.

However, Beccles refused to lay down and struck back almost immediately through a fine individual goal by Cai King.

He picked the ball up midway in the half and beat two defenders before chipping the keeper with a sublime finish.

Beccles shut up shop, and although Union missed a good chance near the end, went on to register a thoroughly deserved 2-1 win.

No home games at College Meadow tomorrow as both teams travel, the first team to Cromer, Reserves to Thetford.

Next home action is on Tuesday (April 15) when the Reserves are at home to South Walsham, 6.30pm kick-off.
