Beccles Golf Club recorded a fine victory against Hintlesham Hall to march on into the second round of Suffolk Golf Union’s Tolly Cobbold Cup.
With the greens in magnificent condition and the course playing well, Beccles were four holes up after the morning rounds.
Following lunch, the same pairings of Bryan Debenham and Steve Driver, Brian Lever and Jamie Foyster, Christian Lever and Tom Youngman and Keith Pickering and Ben Turner set out to hold their lead. After the first three pairs completed their rounds the match was on a knife-edge with the Beccles team two holes down and with the last pairing teeing off from the 18th two up the tension mounted. A Hintlesham player hitting a shot out of bounds gave the advantage to Beccles and a cool headed Turner holed a tricky putt to take tie by one hole, much to the delight of the team.
The win was a great achievement from Beccles who now face a tie at Diss.
