BECCLES Rowing Club rounded off the most successful year in its history in tremendous style with a black tie awards dinner at the Swan House Restaurant in Beccles.

Chairman Robin De Vere Green formally recognised the club's incredible 12 event wins in 2008, including notable successes at Cambridge, St Neots, the Norfolk Long Distance Sculls and the Boston Marathon.

On an individual level the marvellous Midge Beedham was feted by all for being awarded the ARA Eastern Region Junior Volunteer of the year award and her joint award as National ARA Junior Volunteer of the Year.

The award of the Rose Bowl for outstanding contribution to the club was announced, with long-time captain Jon Benest-Bartram deservedly receiving the honours following his decision to stand down after 16 years of commitment and hard work.

The opening of the club's fantastic new boathouse facility and the acquisition of further new boats, including a flagship Quad Scull thanks to a significant contribution from the Broad's Authority, capped a memorable year.

The formal black tie evening included a superb á la carte menu, chosen personally by proprietor Roland Blunk and excellent red and white Italian wines selected by Carmela Sabbatini.

The awards dinner was a roaring success with revellers dancing under the stars in the heated private courtyard.

Beccles Rowing Club now embarks on the crucial, but excruciating winter training period, where those wishing to emulate the club's event successes will be working up a sweat and wrapping in copious layers to combat the cold weather.

New members are very welcome, with the flourishing junior and women's sections proving particularly popular.

Those wishing to try rowing or help the club in any way are encouraged to contact new club captain Phil Marler at www.becclesrowingclub.co.uk
