Bungay artist Maria Rosier describes her bright, cheerful and colourful work as ideal for a gloomy winter’s day.

So with this in mind, she will be exhibiting at The Fisher Theatre gallery in Bungay over the next month.

Entitled Into the Woods, the preview takes place on Sunday, February 5 and it runs until March 2.

This is Mrs Rosier’s first one woman show, though she has taken part in group exhibitions before. She moved to Bungay a year ago with her husband Eddie, an amateur photographer, and enrolled with Black Dog Art Group where she met Jan Hughes, arts co-ordinator for the Fisher, who invited her to show.

Mrs Rosier, who used to teach English literature in Ipswich, has always kept a sketch book. She takes her inspiration from natural forms and loves the vibrancy of David Hockney’s work.

At the moment she is working on a series of studies of figs – kept fresh in the fridge and strictly not for eating.

She said: “Luckily I don’t like figs but the patterns of the seeds are so exciting and the colours when you cut into it.”

She also enjoys experimenting with different media for her work and often adds elements like tissue paper, fabric, threads or rope to add texture to the finished work. She also likes changing the colours of natural objects to give an abstract feel, but keeping the form and pattern.

“I just want people to enjoy the work and to get positive feedback,” she said. “I like to try to set aside one or two days a week for my art. I can work on it and enjoy music from the radio.”

She said one of her objectives is to draw the viewer into her paintings and enjoy the images, and to bring a splash of colour into life.

Entry to the Fisher exhibition is free.

It can be viewed between 10am and 3pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 6pm on show nights. People are advised to call the Fisher Theatre on 01986 897130 before travelling as the Gallery is occasionally closed for meetings.
