A NEW young theatre company is staging Ben Elton’s adult comedy, Popcorn, at the Fisher Theatre at Bungay tonight and tomorrow.

Formed last autumn, Upshoot drew together young actors with a serious passion for theatre, some already working in entertainment and others preparing to go to drama school. Upshoot aims to provide dramatic entertainment that appeals to a wide-ranging, and particularly, young adult audience, with new works about life today.

Ultan Miller who plays Bruce Delamitri in Popcorn, said more young people would come to the theatre for a night out if things like this were on locally.

Director Laila Choat said: “It’s important that we pass on our love for the arts and theatre to the next generation and know that what we have begun at The Fisher Theatre, for instance, will carry on. We should all be doing everything to encourage younger people to be a part of our community on every level and if that means putting-on something a little different which appeals to them, then why not?”

Asked if Bungay was ready for a play like Popcorn Miss Choat said she had already met many locals who had seen the play when it ran in London, who thought it was brilliant.

“Are you saying nobody swears or watches violent movies outside of the capital or are you actually saying local audiences won’t approve because they don’t contain young people?”

Upshoot’s first production is Ben Elton’s Popcorn, which won numerous comedy and crime awards when it ran in the West End. It takes on ethics, moral responsibility, society’s response to the media and the effect of film violence, all wrapped-up in a superbly funny black comedy. Popcorn packs a fierce comedy punch.

Bruce Delamitri is an Oscar-winning director of hip, post-modern films, very violent but stylish and fizzing with irony. His killers are style icons. Enter Wayne and Scout, two trailer-trash nobodies, infamous for their countrywide, movie-inspired killing spree, come to pay their respects to Bruce. Add a glamour model, an ex-wife, a spoilt teenage daughter and a persistent producer to the mixture, light touch paper and stand well back.

Don’t miss what promises to be an exciting first outing for an exciting new group.

It is on at the the Fisher this evening and tomorrow at 7.30pm. Call the box office on 01986 897130.

Tickets are 8 (concessions 6, and 4 for FYTG members).
