THE classic Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie is being staged at the Fisher Theatre at Bungay this evening and tomorrow.

The Open Space Theatre is bringing to the venue the story of Tom, frustrated in his job and distressed at home by the mental withdrawal of his crippled sister, Laura. Their mother clings frantically to the idea that Laura can lead a normal life and will not let her son fulfil his wish to escape a humdrum existence before his sister is found a husband.

It is a poignant story of hope and betrayal, and is at 7.30pm each night, with tickets 8.50 (concessions 6).

On Tuesday and Wednesday next week The Seagull Repertory brings it touring programme for the year to the Fisher. It is Yasmina Reza's West End comedy smash hit ART, which involves Serge buying an expensive piece of art that turns out to be a white canvas. His friends have divided opinions on it but their private thoughts soon become outspoken as they begin to argue, with hilarious results. It is at 7.30pm, with tickets 9 (8 concessions).

Next Friday the Norwich City Concert Band is performing at the theatre, at 7.30pm. It includes up to 34 musicians and the programme will include work by Edward Elgar, a tribute to the armed forces, and pieces from the musicals Les Miserables and Grease. Tickets are 7.

Later in the month Rodney Bewes (originally famous as one of the Likely Lads in the hit TV comedy series) returns to the Fisher with his Three Men in a Boat production, a one-man show on June 18-19.

The Thursday film next week, at 7.30pm, is Sherlock Holmes (12). The current art exhibition, which opened last night and runs throughout June, shows the work of Lin Patterson, who specialises in bright wall hangings made from hand-dyed cottons and silk velvet.

Tickets for all events at the Fisher are obtainable through the box office on 01986 897130, or via the website: www.fishertheatre.org
