This is billed as the rip-roaring adventures of Robin Hood – a mad and merry pantomime, and it certainly fits all those descriptions.

It is full of energy and pizzaz from start to finish as the age-old legend of Robin Hood standing up for the poor against the Sheriff of Nottingham is given a new gloss. Immersion Theatre is back for a second year at Bungay’s Fisher Theatre, having wowed audiences a year ago with the Wizard of Oz. It does the same with this more traditional panto story.

It is driven by the enthusiasm and clear enjoyment of the cast, the professionalism of everyone involved, and includes a good number of familiar songs backed by precision choreography, well costumed and framed by some very good and colourful backdrops, particularly the Sherwood forest scenes.

All the ingredients of good family pantomime are there – music, action, topical quips, local references, slapstick, the frequent opportunities to hiss and boo the villain (the sheriff of course), among other responses, to clap to the music and coo “aaaaah” at the moments of pathos.

Audience participation is an integral part of pantomime of course – the cast needs the audience and uses it to heighten the sense of fun and to involve them in the story.

So if you are going to the show between now and its final performance on January 2 (and that would be well worth the time and money), join in the fun with the same enthusiasm and energy that the company puts into this fast-moving event which will lift and waken you from the festive lethargy and leave you well entertained and fulfilled.

Will Robin win the hand of the beautiful Maid Marian or will the wicked Sheriff capture her heart? No prizes for guessing the outcome – but just enter into the spirit of it along the way. The Fisher has brought a great family show to Bungay once again.
