Jazz concert at Fisher Theatre, Bungay, for ‘Sargy’

Sunday night at the Fisher Theatre in Bungay saw a special jazz concert take place.
A rare occasion brought an all star quartet together for the first time, for this special “One for Sargy” gig.
They were led by the 78-year-old Bobby Wellins, a friend of Sargy’s, believed by many to be the finest British saxophonist ever.
Sargy Mann is a well known painter who lives and works in Bungay and has recently been diagnosed as extremely ill. When he heard this Bobby Wellins was inspired to put on the gig.
The band was made up of Bobby Wellins and three extremely talented younger musicians - Andy Cleyndert on double bass, Tim Giles on drums and Frank Harrison on keyboards.
The band was excited and so was the near capacity audience.
It was an emotional occasion and Sargy Mann started the evening playing the drums himself.
Seven years ago he and Bobby Wellins performed together at the Fisher theatre but on this evening he was only strong enough to play two lovely medium tempo numbers. However the rich emotional story of the evening was trumped by the quality of the music. A thrilled Sargy Mann said: “It was one of those rare occasions when everything comes together and everyone excels.”
