Beccles-based musical theatre society the Waveney Light Opera Group (WLOG) is marking it’s 50th year with a ball to be held on Saturday, June 13, at St Luke’s Hall in Beccles.

Drawing its support from a group of singers at the Beccles Modern School and Evening Institute who began to put on productions in 1954, WLOG was constituted in its present form in 1965 with a production of The Yeoman of the Guard. Until 1978, productions were taken solely from the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, but since then all forms of light opera and musical theatre have been attempted, recent examples being Sweeney Todd, Singin’ in the Rain, The Full Monty, Sweet Charity and Guys and Dolls. Several of the group’s productions in recent years have won NODA awards (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) including their 2013 production of The Reunion, which won the prestigious President’s Cup.

Members are looking for anyone with pictures or programs from old productions which they hope will form a display on the night as part of the celebration, and former members are invited to attend to share stories with current members.

Auditions are also about to take place for WLOG’s next production, The Pajama Game, which will be performed in October. To find out more call Helen Roscoe on 07772411257 or email
