The Bungay Society held its first meeting of 2023 when the speaker, Georgette Vale, entertained the audience in the role of Queen Victoria.
A good crowd turned out to hear details of 19th-century life and the important events during Victorian times.
The next talk on February, Thursday 16, will be given by Terry Reeve about the Great Fire of Bungay which destroyed the town in March 1688.
Holy Trinity Church, however, survived unscathed, and a small, brass plaque on the church door testifies: “Here was the Fire stayed 1688”.
Many residents were made homeless and jobless, and a public appeal was launched, resulting in donations from all over the country to assist people.
As a result, the town was virtually rebuilt.

Not all meetings are about history but cover a large range of local or national subjects.
Visitors are always welcome to talks held at the New Community Centre.
The New Community Centre is situated on Old Grammar Lane, Bungay, between the medical centre and the fire station, adjacent to the playing field and skate park.
