It is one of Britain's most beloved comedy sketches, and now 47 years later a Norfolk hardware store has paid tribute to the classic scene.

The Two Ronnies comedy skit starts with customer Ronnie Barker appearing to ask shopkeeper Ronnie Corbett for "four candles" when he means fork handles.

In a tribute to the 1976 sketch, Loddon Garden and DIY has designed a special display window in the shop.

The mock-up of the shop from the BBC show proved a hit with customers as it led to fork handles flying off the shelves at the Loddon business.

The shop regularly changes its window displays in line with the season and has won the south Norfolk town's last two Christmas window decoration competitions.

Shop manager, Sarah Colman, 55, said: "We usually do seasonal displays anyway, and since this time of year is rather bland and dull it was just a simple and fun way for us to put smiles on people's faces.

"It has just been a bit of fun which the community has really warmed to.

"We see lots of smiling faces as people walk past, but equally it shows some people's ages when they really don't get the joke.

"In the shop, we sell all items needed for the sketch, the fork handles, hoses and candles, so it just made sense."

Remarkably Mrs Coleman said that at one point the shop had sold out of fork handles, something they wondered may have been a "coincidence".

She said: "At one point we had to get some emergency fork handles and even sell the ones we had in our window display.

"I don't know if that is just a strange coincidence or what, but we will never refuse sales."

Andrew Carver, who has owned the shop for nearly 21 years, said: "The sketch is absolutely one of the best-ever episodes of television ever, it is just brilliant, playful, silly and funny."
