About 200 people have saddled up to take part in the Beccles Cycle for Life charity ride.

The ride took place on Sunday and offered participants a choice of five routes from Sir John Leman High School ranging from eight to 50 miles.

It was organised by Beccles Rotary Club and the event raised funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Rotary club’s charitable trust.

Organisers at the Rotary club hope that more than £4,000 will be raised thanks to the pedal power of the cyclists.

The mayor of Beccles, Barry Darch, waved off the riders and then he and his wife, the mayoress, joined in to ride the eight-mile route.

This year children in family groups took part free of charge, as the normal cost was fully subsidised by a donation from Norfolk and Suffolk Chartered Financial Planners.

Refreshments at the school were provided by the Beccles Inner Wheel Club.

Paul Randle, who headed up the organising committee, said, “We are so grateful to the mayor and mayoress for supporting our event, to the Leman school for the venue and their help and to our sponsors.

"We also thank our many helpers in the two clubs and their spouses and friends and most especially all the riders for taking part.

"Fundraising is the main agenda, but we also look to provide an enjoyable community event."

Lord Somerleyton also offered a prize of a day out for four people at the gardens of Somerleyton Hall for the cyclist who raised the most in donations.

A statement from the Rotary club said: "There were about 200 riders and the weather was fine but a little cold, though the sun came out later and the riders enjoyed the warmth when it did."
